Dongzhimen Hospital, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine: A Leading National TCM Medical Center

Dongzhimen Hospital, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, was founded in 1958. It is the First Clinical Medical College of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, a university included in China’s “211 Project,” “985 Project Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform,” and national “Double First-Class” construction initiative.

The hospital is one of China’s first large comprehensive Grade III Class A traditional Chinese medicine hospitals and national demonstration TCM hospitals. It is also among the first national TCM clinical research bases and national drug clinical trial institutions, as well as a World Health Organization training base for appropriate TCM techniques.

The hospital has built a strategic layout of “two campuses and one international department.” The Dongcheng Campus is located at No. 5 Haiyuncang, Dongcheng District, Beijing; the Tongzhou Campus is located at No. 116 Cuiping West Road, Tongzhou District; and the International Department is located at No. 279 Dongsi North Street, Dongcheng District.

Since its founding, the hospital has been well known for its long history, respected experts, strong TCM techniques, and high-quality services. In 1991, the hospital established a TCM branch in Europe, Kötzting Hospital in Germany, becoming an important window for international exchange in traditional Chinese medicine.

Dongzhimen Hospital has long followed the principle of inheritance with innovation. It focuses on using traditional Chinese medicine and integrated Chinese-Western medicine approaches to address major diseases and difficult modern health conditions.

The hospital has 1 key discipline of the Ministry of Education, 9 key disciplines of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 2 Beijing key disciplines, 6 national clinical key specialties, 5 regional TCM specialty diagnosis and treatment centers, 16 key specialties of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and 13 Beijing key specialties.

The hospital is led by five major clinical centers: the Brain Disease Center, Cardiovascular Center, Nephrology and Endocrinology Center, Orthopedics and Traumatology Center, and Respiratory Center. These centers integrate internal medicine, surgery, TCM therapy, and rehabilitation into coordinated diagnosis and treatment models.

The Brain Disease Center includes brain disease medicine, neurosurgery, brain rehabilitation, NICU, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, with more than 300 beds. The Cardiovascular Center has more than 200 beds; the Nephrology and Endocrinology Center has nearly 200 beds; the Orthopedics and Traumatology Center has more than 200 beds; and the Respiratory Center has more than 150 beds.

Dongzhimen Hospital has long followed the principle of “talent first.” It has built an expert team led by academic masters, supported by renowned TCM specialists and young clinical talents. The hospital has produced three academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, creating a remarkable achievement in the field of TCM brain disease medicine.

The hospital has trained 2 National TCM Masters, 3 National Famous TCM Doctors, 20 Capital Famous TCM Masters, 5 Qihuang Scholars, and many other leading TCM professionals. It also has 458 professionals with senior technical titles, 17 national inheritance studios for senior TCM experts, and 18 Beijing TCM inheritance platforms under the “Xinhuo 3+3” project.

The hospital currently has 86 clinical specialties, 1,574 planned beds, more than 2,700 staff members, and over 3 million outpatient and emergency visits annually. The Tongzhou Campus has more than 800 staff members and nearly 400 beds, with bed utilization above 95%.

Dongzhimen Hospital is equipped with more than 1,200 advanced medical devices, including PET-CT, MRI, CT, angiography systems, ultrasound diagnostic systems, automatic biochemical analyzers, argon-helium cryoablation systems, and photodynamic therapy devices. The total value of these devices reaches approximately 300 million RMB.

The hospital is among the first national TCM clinical research bases. It has high-level research platforms, including a Ministry of Education key laboratory of TCM internal medicine, a key research office of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and a Beijing key laboratory of TCM internal medicine.

During the construction period of its national TCM clinical research base, the hospital received 418 research projects, 212 million RMB in research funding, 33 science and technology achievement awards, 16 approved invention patents, and more than 47 million RMB in technology achievement transformation.

As the First Clinical Medical College of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Dongzhimen Hospital has strong teaching capabilities. It has 2 first-level discipline degree authorization points, covering 6 doctoral degree programs and 7 master’s degree programs. The hospital has 73 doctoral supervisors and 110 master’s supervisors.

Since 1958, the hospital has trained large numbers of high-quality TCM physicians and has sent many outstanding TCM professionals to different parts of the world. It has also formed a medical alliance centered on Dongzhimen Hospital, covering more than 170 TCM hospitals across 22 provinces in China.

The hospital has made contributions during infectious disease outbreaks, major earthquakes, and public health emergencies. In 2020, it was recognized as an advanced collective in Beijing’s fight against COVID-19. In 2025, its Tongzhou Campus was recognized as an excellent case of hospital culture construction led by party building in the capital’s TCM system.
