Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center originated from the ophthalmology departments of Lingnan University Medical College, Sun Yat-sen University Medical College, and Guanghua Medical College in 1953. It was officially established in 1965 and became China’s first modern multi-functional ophthalmic center integrating clinical care, teaching, research, and blindness prevention.

It is the only WHO Collaborating Centre for Eye Health and Vision in China and consistently ranks among the top ophthalmology institutions globally.
